Jones in a trance asked if this changes anything, Ryan tells Jones "Somethings, but not everything". Garry and another Temple member wrestles Sly to the ground, cutting Sly's hand and getting blood on Ryan. Ryan tries to assure Jim Jones that only a few people are leaving and none of them are members of concern relatives, suddenly Don Sly attacks Ryan and tries to cut his throat. This worries the defectors since he is loyal to Jim Jones, but he is allowed onto the truck. In total fifteen people defect and go with Congressman Ryan, with one more resident named Larry Layton joining with them. Jones also confronts Vern and Monica, asking them if they are lovers and telling Vern to sign a document stating that he'll leave his four year old bi-racial son Mark in Jonestown, and promises Vern that he is welcomed to return to Jonestown. Jones now is paranoid as he looses control over the people of Jonestown, he rambles during an interview with Don Harris about the government is out to get him, denies the guards have guns, and begs them to leave him alone. The next day, more people decide they want to leave. Harris shows the note to Ryan and they meet with Vern promising he and Monica safe passage out of Jonestown, but Vern fears that they'll never leave Jonestown alive. Vern passes the note to Don Harris, NBC reporter thinking he is Congressman Ryan but a child spots him and alerts the guards. Everyone is impressed with how well the community is functioning, but reporter Tim Reiterman is surprised how weak Jim Jones looks like and how he has so many people in his care. After getting into Jonestown, both Ryan and Garry convince Jones to allow the reporters into Jonestown. When the plane arrives at Port Kaituma airport, a member of the Guyanese army doesn't allow the reporters to enter despite Garry's objection. Unbeknownst to Jones, Monica and Vern are planning to delieve a letter to Ryan telling them to get them out of Jonestown. Preparing for the visit by Congressman Ryan, Jones has followers such as Christine Miller, Hyacinth Thrash, Monica Bagsby, and Vern Gosney to practice what to say to Congressman Ryan and his delegation. After speaking the Jones on the radio, Jones allows the Congressman and the relatives into Jonestown. The Peoples Temple's lawyer Charles Garry angered at Jones' about face threatens to leave for Miami if he cannot get Jones to cooperate. On November 17, Jones denies Congressman Ryan entry into Jonestown. Jones tries to get Marceline to order them back to Jonestown, but Jones' mental breakdown and Marceline refusal to listen to Jones convinces Stephan to stay in Georgetown. Jones orders the basketball team to return back to Jonestown, but Stephan refuses to listen to his father. The next day, Congressman Ryan meets with Stephan, the basketball team, Sharon and her children where she tells Ryan to leave the home. Sharon Amos informs Jones through a radio call from a Peoples Temple house in Gerogetown that the Congressman and the relatives want to enter Jonestown. At first Jones refuses to allow them because of Congressman Ryan's arrival, but Marceline Jones insists that they can leave Jonestown fearing what could happen if they stay. The following day, Jim Jones' son Stephan leaves to Georgetown with the Jonestown basketball team to play against the Guyanese national team. On November 14, 1978, Congressman Leo Ryan, reporters, and family members of Temple members arrive in Georgetown, Guyana to see if people want to leave Jonestown and return to America. Many people want to leave, but fear of being punished by talking of escape to someone who is an informant for Jim Jones. He and his followers move to Guyana to build their utopia to escape any rumors about abuse at the hands of Jim Jones, whether of mental, physical, or sexual abuse reported by people who have left The Peoples Temple.Īs more people move to Jonestown, Jones becomes more dependant on drugs and orders staged mass suicides, called White Nights to control the masses in Jonestown. Jim Jones is the leader of The Peoples Temple, a socialist-Christian movement turned into a atheistic-Communist cult with Jones practicing fake healings and being their prophet. The docudrama follows the last days of Jim Jones and the people living in Jonestown before they committed "revolutionary suicide" on November 18, 1978.
